... members of the Sefton art Group on a visit to the Tate, Liverpool, to view an exhibition

Left, Veronica and Pam at Southport's Botanic gardens. Through the summer, we have started painting out of doors, on a Monday, at various locations throughout the local area, including the Albert Dock, Liverpool. find out more... We have had another busy year, with an expansion of art classes across Sefton, including the Atkinson in Southport. Membership also gives new members their first opportunity to exhibit. With a growing membership it has allowed us to put on more exhibitions and we were the first group to be asked to exhibit at the recently refurbished Atkinson in Southport when it re-opened. That proved a big success. We are a very active group of artists, made up by people throughout the Sefton region and probably the biggest group that meet weekly to engage in art, art classes and art activites and much more. We are always welcoming to new members or anyone who is thinking of taking up art lessons and would like to come along and visit one of our several weekly classes, held at Hightown, Lydiate, Southport and Maghull, with a life drawing class in Liverpool. A further enrolment for new members will take place later this year, so for anyone who is thinking of taking up art classes are welcome to come along, meet and talk to the members to find out more and put your name down for the next enrolment. The art classes are designed for both beginners and the more advanced. People can be nervous at taking up art for the first time, so coming along to one of the classes will help you to overcome any nervousness.
The group offers more than just classes, with opportunities to exhibit, visit local galleries and to get involved with the local community. Members worked together to put on an exhibition on commemorating the outbreak of the First World War, which proved to be a huge success at Maghull Town Hall last November.
As well as offering art classes to all abilities we encourge members to exhibit their work, and put on our own art exhibitions. Most of our members enjoyed art when at school, but never had the opportunity to follow it up, because life took over, then, with more time on their hands they decided to finally take it up. You don’t need any art experience, as the art classes cater for absolute beginners as well as those who have done art recently but feel they’d like to join a more proactive group. For example, we encourage each other to enter their work into local exhibitions. We also run our own exhibitions, at Maghull Town Hall, as well as other locations. It offers members the opportunity to engage more fully in the local art scene, also the opportunity to expose their work to local people, and to sell! We also arrange visits to local art galleries, as well as further afield, like London.

We understand that joining an art class for the first time may seem daunting, that you feel you cannot learn to draw and paint. Remember, learning to draw and paint is like learning any other discipline, YOU CAN LEARN IT in the same way as you learn to drive a car or use a computer! We all feel that way at first, but very quickly you will start to enjoy drawing and painting because the art classes are designed to teach you all the basics. After about two months, you will have gained enough knowledge to work more independantly with the tutor still on hand to give you help and advice. Remember, you will be with like minded people, who enjoy art classes.
(above) Members get introduced to very creative ways of doing art, as in this example, a 'Collage', using a wide variety of mediums, especially when combined.
