GORDON FRASER PUBLISHES HIS BOOK

After several years of meticulous research, Gordon has finally published his book which traces the history of the development of steam ships, and much more...

art exhibition in wayfarers arcade, southport

The Royal Mail Ship "Scotia" was the last of the Cunard paddle liners operating between Liverpool and North America and she was the biggest and finest pure paddle steamer that the world will ever see. This book tells the story of the vessel and what happened before to make her possible. It tells of people of great vision and inventiveness who worked hard to make their dreams come true, people like Samuel Cunard, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, James Watt and, not least, the people and merchants of Liverpool. This is a good read for everyone, not just for those interested in history or ships.

BBC TELEVISION VISIT OUR GROUP

Right: member Steve Broadhurst with camerman, Daniel.sefton art members working on large world war one art work

Our art group played host Friday February 27th to BBC1’s North West Tonight. Eno Eurotor, the BBC journalist spent two hours filming and interviewing members. Obviously members were flattered to be chosen to help promote the BBC’s “Let’s Get Creative” which is also linked to the “Big Painting Challenge” which goes out on BBC 1 Sunday evenings and features armature artists, competing against each other. I received a call from the production staff two weeks ago and the group was able to stage a busy art session, as we were asked to provide a good cross-section of members, together with human interest stories. On the day, six members were chosen, including one lady member who retired at 60, came to the class to take up art as a leisure pursuit and is now doing her first year on a Fine Art Degree course in Liverpool. At the end of the filming, all the members felt it was a great experience working with Eno and the cameraman, Daniel. We are a very proactive group, and this was the main reason why the BBC chose us. The BBC interest in our group came at a good moment for us, as members are in the process of preparing work for our next exhibition, which is May 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The news item is scheduled to go out this Monday 2nd March on North West Tonight at 6.30. The May exhibition we are trying a new idea, introducing a craft fair section in the hope it will attract a wider appeal and bring in even more visitors.

As you may have seen, the Sefton Art Group staged a 10 day exhibition to commemorate the WW1. The aim was to focus on the human side of the conflict, and also to raise money for the Liverpool Pals Association. Recently we recived the above letter thanking the group for its support. A further £82 was raised for the British Legion.

To celebrate the end of our year, we take a break through August, commencing again in September, artists enjoy a get-together at a local restuarant. As well as doing art, members do form friendships and we encourage members to engage in the social side of the Sefton Art Group so they can enjoy a wider experience of being involved with the creative arts.

LEFT: On July 21st a number of the members visited the Mondrian exhibition at the Tate, Liverpool. We also had the benefit of an introductory talk about the artist. We encourage members to visit major exhibitionS as often the ideas of a particular artist can feed through to their own work. On this occassion I was struck by the ideas behind Mondrian's work more than the images on the wall!

This piece has been several months in the making. An intial idea by several of our members, led by Hazel Gibbons and Carol Brown. The subject needs some studying before you can probably recognise it... Yes, it's Liverpool waterfront, done in an interesting way. Mostly images cut out of magazines, then glued to the design. The whole image is 4 feet by 3. The image is now on display at Maghull Town Hall.

If you think that joining a class might be a bit intimidating, don't let that put you off. Remember, everyone in the class have the same interest as yourself, plus they also felt the same. Besides, people join at different times, and they soon settle in. However, what I advise potential members is ..."Why not come along for one lesson free of charge?".... Then go away and make your mind up? There's no obligation. by coming along you can meet and talk to other artists about the art course.

The Sefton art group were pleased to have been chosen to put on the first major art exhibition at the recently refurbished Atkinson art centre, Lord Street, Southport. On the weekend of November Saturday 30th and Sunday 1st of December, we will be promoting what we do at the Atkinson art centre, Southport. Please contact us for more information..

roy munday and graham macquade outside art gallery in wayfarers arcade, southport Roy Munday and Graham Macquade outside of the temporary art gallery in Southport's Wayfarers Arcade, on Lord Street. The Sefton art group held a very successful exhibition there until Christmas. This provided an opportunity for people to go along and meet the artists and find out more about taking up art classes in the local area.

Roy Munday runs several art classes on behalf of Sefton Arts and the combined groups have now grown into a very lively art group where people come together to not only learn about doing art, but also as a social activity. There are no pressures put on people in any of Roy's classes - No certificates to achieve and which take away much of the fun from art and are worthless to most people. At the same time his art courses are structured according to the needs of each person. As with any group of people, you will find different needs and different abilities. Some people may have done art at school, then nothing for many years, but have a long desire to do it - And that's all that's needed. Roy can teach you the basics, starting from the beginning, learning how to draw up your subject, then on to tonal work, using charcoal. Then you move on to using paint, again, starting with the basics. A few weeks later you will start to learn about colour theory. Once you reach this stage, then you can start to think about working more independantly, but with Roy still offering help and tuition.
